The goddess of the Moon was called Luna by the Romans and portrayed as a crescent moon before the moon was Romanized, Greek mythology the moon was represented as the Goddess Selene, The name Selene is derived from the Greek noun selas meaning light, brightness, gleam. These two cultures present the moon to be a female deity. The New Moon is associated with making fresh starts The traditional astrological symbol is the crescent moon and is the alchemical symbol for Silver. The Hermetic sciences symbol represents liquid, passive and feminine. There are many meanings associated with each phase of the moon these are just a few rebirth, feminine energy, fertility, progress, Life and Death.
